VIOLIN CONCERTO*
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

A CAROL SYMPHONY
Victor Hely-Hutchinson

RODERICK DUNK
Conductor

Alexandra Wood, our violin soloist for this concert will be familiar to RTWSO audiences, having made several recent appearances in Tunbridge Wells. She will be playing Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Violin Concerto: one of the best known yet most technically demanding concertos for the violin. She has won prizes at a number of international violin competitions and her dazzling virtuosity has been noted in many concert reviews. To open the concert we are including Borodin’s exciting Prince Igor overture, full of Oriental colours and memorable melodies. Performances of Victor Hely-Hutchinson’s Carol Symphony are unfortunately fairly rare nowadays but it is an appropriate piece to include in a concert during the lead up to Christmas. Its four movements have themes based on familiar Christmas carols, transformed with consummate musical skill into a delightful yet cleverly constructed symphony.
